The GAIA project
An independent platform that brings the universe within everyone's reach: verified news, a precisely computed sky, a sourced catalogue and a community of observers.

What we do
- We collect news published by NASA and ESA, showing the title, a short summary and a link to the original article.
- We compute Moon phases, eclipses, oppositions, elongations and conjunctions with an open-source astronomy engine instead of copying them by hand.
- We describe planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies and missions with data cited from scientific sources.
- We collect sightings from the community and compare them with a public method.
Sources
- News: Spaceflight News API (The Space Devs), which aggregates NASA's and ESA's official feeds.
- Upcoming launches: Launch Library 2 (The Space Devs).
- Astronomical computations: astronomy-engine by Don Cross, MIT licence.
- Meteor showers: International Meteor Organization working list (indicative values).
- Catalogue: NASA Planetary Fact Sheet, NASA Science, ESA, ESO and the International Astronomical Union, cited on each entry.
- Place search: OpenStreetMap Nominatim, © OpenStreetMap contributors.
Independence
GAIA is not affiliated with NASA, ESA or any other space agency. Third-party content belongs to its authors: we show it briefly with a link to the source.
Images
Pictures of celestial bodies in the catalogue are illustrations generated by the site, not photographs, and are always labelled as such. Scientific photographs will only be added with a compatible licence and attribution.
