Terms of use

The rules for using GAIA and contributing to the community.

Draft to be reviewed by legal counsel before launch.

The service

GAIA is an independent astronomy outreach platform. It is not affiliated with NASA, ESA or other agencies, whose news is shown as third-party content with links to the original source.

Your reports

  • Only report what you personally observed, as accurately as you can.
  • Only upload photos and videos you own or have the right to share.
  • Do not include other people's personal data (recognisable faces, licence plates, addresses).
  • You grant GAIA a free, non-exclusive licence to show your descriptions anonymously and, if you allow it, your photos in confirmed sightings.

What “Community confirmed” means

It means a report is supported by at least ten compatible contributions that passed the automatic checks. It is not a scientific confirmation or an identification of the phenomenon. The methodology page explains how it works.

Moderation

GAIA may suspend automatic publication, send to review, archive or remove content and accounts that break these rules or appear manipulated.

Safety while observing

Never look at the Sun without certified filters, not even during a partial eclipse. Observe from safe places and follow local rules.

Limitation of liability

Astronomical data are computed or provided by third-party sources and may contain inaccuracies. [Complete with the liability clause and governing law.]
